HBO Flashback

If you saw this HBO intro as a child in the 80’s you were either that one really rich kid who had everything or you were like the rest of America who only saw it when HBO was for free that weekend. Free HBO weekend had been marked on your calendar for months just so you wouldn’t miss unedited, rated R movies on TV. Once Friday came you made sure you had your VCR set to SLP (Super Long Play) so you’d be able to record as many movies as possible on the pile of blank tapes that were stacked next to the TV. This intro meant that you weren’t leaving your chair for a long time and that breakfast, lunch, and dinner would consist of buttered popcorn and Twizzlers. As a fan of movies you couldn’t miss any of this because this wasn’t TV, this was HBO, and it was worth every minute.

Yeah! The rare full-town version! I had the chicken-pox the week HBO was offering a free trial *and* showing Star Wars

I still have the original tapes with movies recording from free HBO weekend. I must have watched Silence of the Lambs 20 times.

I always loved that intro soo much!!! The miniatures are amazing. Makes it feel like you are about to see the most important film of your life every time.

At the end of the video it always felt like you were going into warp speed.

I always recorded at SP speed. I was a picture quality snob.

And some movies I didn’t have to record, because they seemed to be on regular rotation. Teen Witch, anyone?

And we all know what HBO stood for: Hey, Beastmaster’s On!

Chris – That is EXACTLY what HBO stood for. Today I would record at SP but we wanted the most movies on one tape. Those tapes got me through a cableless dorm room in college.
