The novel Dune, written by Frank Herbert, is considered to be one of the greatest science-fiction novels ever written. Hollywood wanted to make it into a film since it first hit the shelves in 1964 but the project constantly found itself in developmental hell. In 1981, David Lynch (The Elephant Man, Wild at Heart) was hired to direct and write the film adaptation.
The end product was not received well by critics and did not perform to the expectations that were set at the box office. David Lynch distanced himself from the theatrical release due to lack of creative control and not having final cut. There are numerous DVD releases where David Lynch has been replaced in the credits with Alan Smithee, a pseudonym used by directors who do not want to be associated with the film.
While there are so many mixed opinions about the movie, there’s no denying that the Shai-Hulud would approve of this behind the scenes footage, shot by actress Sean Young.
