You either love Steve Buscemi or know him as that weird looking guy who keeps getting work. Either way, Happy 55th Birthday!
Tree’s Lounge Trailer
Tree’s Lounge was Buscemi’s directorial debut. The first time I saw it I was living in Las Vegas. My friend had just broken up with his girlfriend. I went over to his house because to keep him company because that’s what guys do. You know, bros before hos.
When I arrived to his house, he was 2/3 done with a liter of vodka. He looks at me, walks over and says, “Dan, we’re watching Tree’s Lounge.” I had no idea what Tree’s Lounge was or why we’re going to watch it but but I was ready to go there.
He hands me a drink, “But the only way to watch it is with a drink.” I wasn’t sure why I had to drink while watching a movie. You see, I’m a movie purest. I don’t like to be distracted. I want to give a movie the attention it deserves. Twenty minutes in, it all made sense. The alcohol was like Smell-O-Vision – but for drinkers. The drinking complimented Buscemi’s vision, his storytelling. Yes, I know you may be saying to yourself, “Drinking makes any movie better.” No. No, it doesn’t. You see, the drinking made it feel like we were at the bar with these characters. It just made sense.
When the movie ended, we kept drinking. We talked about things I will never be able to remember and probably don’t want to remember. The sun rose. We passed out.
As I finish writing this, I realize that you may never have the same experience that I did. And I ask that you don’t move to Las Vegas or become friends with someone who just broke up with his girlfriend to chase after my experience. All I’m asking is that you watch it and have your own experience. You owe it to Steve. You owe it to yourself.
